Spring has sprung and Sandhills Cycling Club (SCC) is offering many opportunities for cyclists at all levels to participate in road cycling events.
Cycling is a wonderful way to get some fresh air, exercise and enjoy the company of others. It's a non-impact sport, so it's wonderful for people who cannot endure the impact of running. Also, cycling is a wonderful community sport. You get to meet other people and learn more about the area.
Two new events being offered by Sandhills Cycling Club are a biweekly Time Trial series and a Monday night beginners' ride. The time trial consists of each cyclist racing against the clock. Cyclists are started at one-minute intervals and travel over a specified course. Since everyone is riding individually, you are only racing against yourself. The events will take place on the second and fourth Thursdays of each month beginning in April at Hobby Field in Southern Pines.
Registration begins at 5:45 p.m. and the racing begins at 6 p.m. There will be a $10 entry fee for the race number. If you bring the number back each time, there are no additional charges.
A time trial is a great way to gauge your cycling fitness. By participating each month, you can see your progress using a definitive, quantifiable measurement. This is not just for racers either. SCC welcomes all riders and will only post your times only if you wish.
The Monday night beginners ride is an exciting new opportunity for first timers, or 'rusty' cyclists and starts on April 6th. This ride will leave from Rainbow Cycles in downtown Southern Pines at 5:30 p.m. The ride distance will be around 15 miles. This is a friendly group and will have a ride leader. Please come out and join us. A road bike in good working condition is required. You should also carry a spare tube and small pump/CO2 cartridge in case you get a flat. Don't worry, we'll help you change it at least the first time!
Sandhills Cycling Club promotes widespread participation in fair and safe cycling activities for all ages, genders and skill levels. As with all cycling events, please bring a helmet to club sponsored events and group rides.
