Patsy Bonsal and her late husband, William "Rocky" Bonsal, completely renovated an existing house at the Country Club of North Carolina, creating "Stonegate," a gracious home with all the charm and elegance of an English country manor.
The Bonsal home is one of six on view during this year's Southern Pines Garden Club Home and Garden Tour, scheduled from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday, April 8.
Positioned above a bay window and beneath the eaves of the Tudor-style exterior, a circular decorative element that is a combination of the couple's initials provides a logo for the transformation.
Inside the carved wooden double front doors, deep dentil crown molding and quality millwork grace the rooms throughout the home. Family portraits in almost every room add personality and history to this gracious home. Flowers bloom on the living room carpet. Plush sofas and chairs arer upholstered in designer fabrics in a pleasing palate of soft yellows and greens. Walls of the sitting areas off the living room are richly paneled in wood.
In the formal dining room, above the wainscoting, the wall moldings have a delicate celadon green paper insert in the panels. Chrysanthemums on the paper look painted-on by hand. A beautiful bay window opposite the fireplace is uniquely defined by five panels of solid glass with oval arches. The 1700s portrait of a family matriarch, affectionately known to the Bonsal family as "Muz," dominates the wall at the head of the table.
Serene and inviting, the large master bedroom has built-in dressers in a creamy white that are the quality of fine furniture. Carved swags on the room's crown molding pick up the luminous yellow of the bed drapes and curtains.
More quality millwork is evident in alcove nooks and custom cabinetry that define the working areas of the gourmet kitchen and great room. A beautiful wood-paneled wall of bookcases and cabinets designates the entertainment area. A hand painting of "The Four Seasons" below a domed ceiling over an impressive round table caps the view to the lovely gardens beyond the homes extensive brick patio.
Other homes on the tour are Reginald Miller's Southern Pines farm; Trish and Jarret Deerwester's Victorian renovation; Chimbley, the former orchid nursery renovated by art collectors Annie Hallinan and Michael Jones; Susan and James Rice's Old Town colonial overlooking Pinehurst No. 2, and Jean and David Shunk's serenely modern home at the Country Club of North Carolina.
Proceeds from the tour benefit public beautification projects, also scholarships for horticultural students at Sandhills Community College.
Tickets, which are $20, may be purchased at www.southernpinesgarden club.com, at The Country Bookshop and Campbell House in Southern Pines and Lyne's Furniture Gallery in Pinehurst. Lunch will be offered by the Country Club of North Carolina for $15.
