Mustangs Top Warriors, Continue Hot Start

Off to its best start in school history, the North Moore girls' soccer team will face its toughest test of the season tonight.

The Mustangs (5-2, 3-0) will host Jordan Matthews at 6:30 p.m. Jordan Matthews is also unbeaten in conference, but has a tie with conference foe East Montgomery.

"It's going to be real interesting," said Mustang head coach James Horwath.

The Mustangs enter the game off a 2-0 win over conference foe West Montgomery Monday night.

Esther Pascal and Paige Garner scored for the Mustangs, who dominated the action against the Warriors.

Pascal scored the first Mustang goal off a throw-in from Whitney Morgan. Morgan sent the ball into the Warrior penalty box. The ball bounced around in a crowd of players before Pascal settled it and scored from close range.

"I felt like it was a little bit lucky," Pascal said after the game. "I didn't kick it as cleanly as I normally do."

"Esther was in the right place at the right time," Horwath said. "So many times this season we had those opportunities and haven't been able to convert. Tonight, Esther did."

Pascal's goal came at 21:26 of the first half. It was a half that the Mustangs dominated, allowing the Warriors to advance the ball into their defense half of the field only once. The Mustang defense allowed only one first-half shot.

Late in the first half, Page Garner -- a defensive back who had been moved up to a forward position to take advantage of her great speed -- broke free from the defense and fired a shot wide of the goal.

Sixteen minutes into the second half, Garner got another opportunity and converted.

She took a pass near midfield from fellow forward Jazmin Medina. Garner took the ball between two defenders and outraced a third to the goal where she shot a low line-drive past the Warrior keeper.

"She (Medina) just kicked the ball up to me and I chased it down," Garner said. "I was excited it was my first goal in high school."

Horwath said he moved Garner to an offensive position to take advantage of her speed.

"I wanted her there to cause them some stress, and she definitely created some stress."

Garner nearly got a second goal in the waning seconds of the match, but her shot beat the goalie, but hit the goal frame.

Defensively the Mustangs allowed only three shots on goal in the entire match.

Horwath praised his defense for its effort, but said he worries that sometimes when his team presses forward on the attack, there is a tendency by the players to have a mental lapse, and allow an opposing player to get behind them.

"As long as we can continue to manufacture two to three goals a game, we will be fine."

The Mustangs will likely be without leading scorer Chloe Donaldson, who is recovering from a lower leg injury.
