Crystal Taylor introduced her guests, Dr. Robin Moore and Anna Harris of the Moore County "Community in Schools" program in Southern Middle School.

They are most interested in promoting the "Compass Project Mentoring Program," which is a grant program that matches children in the sixth grade with someone who can give them direction in their lives. The one-hour contact a week with the students really makes a difference in their attitude toward life, community, home, and school.

Mentors and students are trained in the "Seven Habits of Highly Effective People," which was devised by Steve Covey. The areas that the program stresses are live, love, learn and legacy. The program also wants the learner to be proactive, have a beginning and end in mind. Know where you want to go, have priorities, have a good attitude for the when and where, seek to understand and then be understood by others, categorize ideas, and renewal through spiritual, social, emotional, physical and mental attitudes.

Training began on Sept. 15, but can be individually tailored to a mentor's schedule by calling Moore at 638-8223. Twenty-four hours of training is necessary, so all mentors are on the same page. A background check is also done to insure the safety of the children. Mentoring begins the first week of October between 9 a.m. to noon Monday through Thursday.
