The Pinecrest girls finished fifth in the NCHSAA 4-A state golf championship that wound up at Pinehurst No. 1 Tuesday afternoon.
Athens Drive coped with the wind and cold well enough to win the state title with a 36-hole score of 256-255--511. Defending champion Northwest Guilford and first-day leader Grimsley finished four strokes back to tie for second place. The team results are made up of the total strokes of the three lowest scoring players on the team.
New Bern was fourth followed by Pinecrest with scores of 260-264--524.
The medalist was Allison Emrey of Audrey Kell with rounds of 76-75--151. Three golfers were one stroke back, including defending champion Courtney McKim of Wakefield, Courtney Taylor of Ashbrook and Lizzy Bundy of Clayton.
Tiffany Phasukkan led the senior trio of Patriots, finishing 19th individually in the field of 80 players with an 86-85--171 total. Kerry Radigan shot 82-92--174 to come in 23rd. Katie Roberts was 28th after rounds of 92-87--179.
Pinecrest ended its most successful season since the state championship year of 2001. The Patriots, coached by Sandy Sackmann, won their fourth Mid-Southeastern Conference title in a row and finished third at the Central Regional championship behind Grimsley and Northwest Guilford.
