COP BRIEFS: Thief Arrested Inside Jewelry Store

An alarm going off Sunday at Hawkins and Harkness resulted in the arrest of a West End man inside the jewelry store on Broad Street in downtown Southern Pines.

Police encountered Karl Arthur Andrews, 26, of West End inside the store when they responded to the alarm. He was attempting to escape through a window when police spotted him, according to the report.

When officers arrived at the scene of the crime, they discovered a broken window, leading to the search of the building.

Andrews was charged with breaking and entry, and his bail was set at $5,000.

CAR BREAK-IN -- Quick action by a Southern Pines resident last Saturday led to the arrest of a West End man who was charged with breaking into his car.

Jose Efren-Enriquez Plata, 27, was spotted inside a car on East Connecticut Avenue by the owner. He chased Plata, caught him and detained him until Southern Pines police arrived. Another resident who witnessed the break-in helped the man detain the suspect until police got there.

Plata was charged with breaking and entering a motor vehicle. His bail was set at $2,500.

DRUG ARREST -- Investigating a 911 hang-up call last Saturday, a Southern Pines police officer noticed the odor of burning marijuana.

The officer arrested an Aberdeen man on several drug charges after responding to a residence in the 800 block of South Mechanic Street. As the officer approached the door, he smelled marijuana and observed Chauncey Dejuan Seagraves sitting inside the apartment. The officer also spotted several small packages of green vegetable material believed to be marijuana and scales on a table.

Upon further investigation, Seagraves, 22, who lives on Bethesda Avenue in Aberdeen, was arrested and charged with possession with intent to sell or deliver marijuana, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Seagraves' bail was set at $500.
