UP Tennis Has Strong Showing in Sanford

The 2008 Union Pines tennis champions continued their dominance of conference foes during the Cape Fear Valley Conference tournament earlier this week in Sanford.

Wednesday's singles and doubles championship matches both featured all-Vike bills.

In the singles' final, junior Neena Wanko squared off against senior Lydia Stalls. Wanko would come out on top to earn her second Cape Fear Valley Singles Championship (she also won the crown as a freshman in 2006).

With three wins at the tournament Stalls is now number 13 on the all-time Union Pines wins list, with a record of 126-17. She and Wanko will be top seeds for the in the Mid-East 3A regional tournament held at Union Pines on Oct. 17-18.

The doubles' championship featured the Union Pines' pairs of Anna Maness and Jordan Smith playing Nichole Galbicsek and Sammantha Marsh. Maness and Smith won the match 8-2. Both teams will participate in the regional.

Maness, a senior, tallied four wins in the tournament to become the school's 36th female tennis player with 75 career wins. Her record at Union Pines is now 78-9.

As the winners of the regular season Cape Fear Valley conference title, Union Pines will host a first round match in the state dual team playoffs on Tuesday. With a record of 14-0, the Vikings are the 6th ranked team in the North Carolina High School Tennis Coaches Association 3A poll.
