Anyone who is considering an Alaskan vacation during 2009 should plan to attend a special event coming to Southern Pines on Oct. 15 that will provide an interactive, virtual tour of "The Great Land."

Also, with the increased interest about the 49th state since the recent vice presidential nomination of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, this presentation will answer any questions about her place of residence.

The state boasts mountain peaks that humble climbers, earthquakes that silently rumble the quiet land and wildflowers that peek out from temperate rainforests that contrast with treeless tundra.

Alaska is home to mere 640,000 full-time residents, though nearly 1 million travelers visit each year.

Jointly sponsored by AAA Vacations and Holland America Line, the "On Stage Alaska" program is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at the Delta Financial Building in Turnberry Wood at 11 Village Club Court.

The free program includes a film as well as an interactive presentation that bring to life all there is to see and do in Alaska.

The program is open to the public, but reservations for the limited seating event are required by calling (910) 693-0335.

"Alaska is one of our most popular travel destinations," said Claudia Collins, manager of the AAA Vacations in Southern Pines. "It offers breathtaking scenery, such as the icebergs and mountains topped with snow. If you seeking something more adventurous than sight-seeing, you can pursue salmon fishing, whale watching or wilderness hikes."

During the "On Stage Alaska" program, Alaska experts will offer tips on what to pack for an Alaskan trip, when to go and describe what there is to see and do.

Through video clips, the program offers a virtual tour of the major ports of call in Alaska.

"Now is the perfect time to begin planning, as the peak travel season in Alaska runs from May to September, with July and August the most popular months," Collins said. "While our event on Oct. 15 is primarily educational, we will also provide information on travel options for Alaska."

AAA Vacations is the Carolinas largest full-service travel agency, operating 24 offices throughout the Carol-inas, serving both AAA members and non-AAA members.
