Wins and losses are one way to measure the achievement of an athletic program. But for the Pinecrest High School football program, the biggest win has been the way the team that was once everyone's homecoming opponent has become a source of pride for the community.
Many point to the arrival of coach Chris Metzger as the main ingredient of the turnaround of the program.
Much of the credit needs to go to Metzger, a nonstop fountain of enthusiasm, who arrived here two years ago to take over a program that had nearly decided to shut the doors on its varsity program, and start over from scratch. Instead, the community rallied behind the embattled program, while Metzger rallied the students to buy into the fact that the past doesn't have to be prologue to the future. Their reward, at least at this moment, is sporting a 5-1 record after so many seasons of nonstop losing.
But more important than the record is the attitude, the determination, the belief exhibited by the many involved in the program, from the players to the students to the supporters who seized the moment instead of letting the moment seize them. Kudos to all.
