Tennis tournament

The 2008 Chris McLean Memorial Junior Futures tournament will be held Oct. 25-26 at the Scotland County Tennis Center in Laurinburg. The tournament, conducted by the Scotland County Tennis Association, is a USTA sanctioned tournament featuring play in the following age brackets: Boys and girls singles, ages 10 and under, 12 and under, 14 and under, 16 and under and 18 and under. Entry fee: $28. Entrants are limited to entering one bracket only. All first match losers will play in a consolation bracket. Entry deadline: Oct. 20. Baseball tryouts

The Sandhills Lightning, a 13U travel baseball team in Moore County will hold open tryouts for the spring baseball season. The tryouts will be held from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 12 and from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Oct. 18 at Memorial Fields in Southern Pines. Tryouts are for players under age 13 as of May 1, 2009 and who are committed to playing baseball at a high level. The Lightning have played in tournaments all across North Carolina, and the team has finished as one of the top three AAA teams in North Carolina each of the past two seasons. MCPR Youth Basketball Registration

Moore County Parks and Recreation is accepting registration for its youth Basketball Program. Age is determined as of October 16, 2008. Age groups: Boys and Girls 5-6 years old; Girls Basketball Divisions: 7-8 years old, 9-10 years old, 11-12 years old; Boys Basketball Divisions: 7-8 years old, 9-10 years old, 11-12 years old.

The fee is $20 per child. Deadline to register is 5 p.m. Oct. 17. Players must participate in their age group. If child has not participated in any of Moore County's Parks and Recreation programs, proof of age is required.

Register at the Moore County Parks and Recreation office Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The office is located at 155 Hillcrest Park Lane, Carthage. Special on-site registrations will be available from 5 to 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 8 at Davis Community Center, West End Elementary Gym, Vass-Lakeview Elementary Gym and Academy Heights Elementary Gym. Online registration is also available at moorecountyparksandrec.com.

MCPR Youth Cheerleading Registration

Moore County Parks and Recreation is currently taking registration for youth cheerleading. Age groups: 5-8 and 9-12 year olds. Age is determined as of October 16, 2008. The registration fee is $45. Fee includes the cheerleading uniform: top, skirt, undergarment and pompoms). Girls will be measured for uniforms at time of registration. Deadline for registration is 5 p.m. Oct. 17. You may register at Moore County Parks and Recreation office located at 155 Hillcrest Park Lane, Carthage.

On-site registrations will be held from 5 to 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 6 at the following locations: Davis Community Center, West End Elementary Gym and Vass-Lakeview Elementary Gym. There will be ladies available at the on-site registrations to take the girls measurements.

If child has not participated in any of Moore County Parks & Recreation programs, proof of age is required.

SP Festival of Running

The 30th Annual Southern Pines Festival of Running Championship will be held Oct. 4.

If physical fitness is your thing, Autumnfest offers its annual One-Mile Fun Run/Walk and the 5K Road Race with an all-new route.

The One-Mile Fun Run/Walk gets under way at 9:30 a.m. and is free of charge.

The 5K Road Race will begin at 9:50 a.m. and wind through beautiful Southern Pines into horse country and back.

The cost of the 5K is $10 prior to September 27 and $15 the day of the race.

The race entrance fee includes an Autumnfest T-shirt.

To receive a race registration, call the Southern Pines Recreation and Parks Dept. at 910-692-2463.

Race registration on the day of the event will begin at 8:30 a.m. at the Rainey Shelter.

Awards will be presented at 11:30 a.m. at the Autumnfest stage. New this year is a 60 and older age bracket.

Autumnfest Kids Race!

If you're ages 3 to 12 years and think you can run fast, come to Autumnfest and test your foot speed against other kids your age. These races will be held at approximately 10:30 a.m. between the adult race (see above item) and the awards ceremony.

The race is for children ages 3 to 12 years. These races will vary in distance by ages, but none over 100 yards. So get your running shoes on and come on out! Registration will take place that morning at Autumnfest. Event is free.
