Vike Booters Heading to Third Round

The Union Pines boys' soccer team has taken aim on making a little history in its next game.

After defeating visiting South Johnston 5-0 at Woodrow Wilhoit Stadium Saturday, the Vikes advanced to the third round of the state 3-A soccer playoffs.

If Union Pines can win that third-round game (with opponent, date and time yet to be determined), it would be the first boys' soccer team from the school to advance to the quarterfinals.

But before thinking about the future, looking back at Saturday's game provides a glimpse at a Viking team that might just be starting to get on a roll.

With both teams coming from the Cape Fear Valley Conference, familiarity might have bred a bit of feeling-each-other out in the early going. The Trojans took the action to the Vikes in the early going, but Union Pines withstood several strong threats before Va Cha finally broke a scoreless battle.

With less then 10 minutes left in the first, Cha took a pass from his brother, Allen, and pushed across the score, giving the Vikes a 1-0 lead they would take into the locker room at half.

In the second half, the Vikes' defense played superbly, while the offense picked it up a notch.

Ben McMichaels got the first of his two goals off a Va Cha attempt that was deflected to McMichaels by the Trojan goalie.

McMichaels would get his second goal on an assist from Brian Hayes, giving the Vikes a 3-0 lead.

Clark Stout added the Vikes' fourth goal, while Evan Lindsay added the last goal.
