Summer Camp Registration Under Way

The Little Patriots Youth Football Summer Camp for kindergartners through eighth-graders will be held June 11-13 and July 7-11 at Pinecrest High School. The camp hours are from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. each day.

Sponsored by the Sandhills Optimist Club, the camp will be led by Pinecrest head football coach Chris Metzger, his staff and area guest coaches.

All drills and sessions will be conducted in groups based on age. Campers will learn the basics of all positions and get instruction in several phases of the game, including strength, speed, agility, special team skill work and offensive and defensive drill work.

Camp attire is shorts, T-shirts, athletic socks, cleats and running shoes. Campers should bring lunch and plenty of water each day.

The cost is $200 per participant. No child will be excluded because of financial hardship. Registration is by June 1. For more information, contact Metzger at (239) 248-0808.

Union Pines Hoops

The Union Pines Viking Basketball Camp will be held June 16-19 at New Century Middle School. The camp, which has been around for more than 30 years, will focus on fun while developing basketball skill and knowledge.

The camp is open to rising third- to ninth-grade boys and girls. The campers will be led by UPHS basketball players in station, activities and skill development sessions that concentrate on passing, shooting, dribbling and defense. There will also be games and skills competitions.

Each camper will receive a camp T-shirt, and an ice cream party will be held at the end of the camp.

Registration for the camp is on Monday, June 16, from 8 a.m. until 8:30 a.m. Clinic times will run from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. each day. The cost of the camp is $40.

Bobby Purvis asks that campers please register early by sending a check or money order to Union Pines Basketball, marked to his attention.

The camp's staff includes Purvis, girls' basketball coach John Lewkowicz, current Union Pines' players and former players, and guest speakers.

Pinecrest Basketball Camp

The Patriot Basketball Camp for rising third- through ninth-grade boys is scheduled to be held at Pinecrest High School from June 23 through 26.

The camp director is Pinecrest boys' varsity basketball coach Mike Apple.

He will be assisted by members of the Patriot coaching staff, along with other area coaches and former and present members of Pinecrest basketball teams.

Camp hours are from 8:30 a.m. until noon.

The camp is geared toward boys desiring to improve their individual basketball skills.

It will provide the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of the game and participate in daily camp competitions.

Registration is limited to the first 100 campers.

Each camper will receive a camp T-shirt and handbook. Activities include an ice cream party.

The cost is $40.
