O'Neal Boys' Tennis Team Takes Eighth in State Event

The O'Neal School boys' tennis team ended the season with an eighth-place finish in the NCISAA state 2-A championship held at Cape Fear Academy and UNC Wilmington on May 16-17.

The Falcons collected five points in the tournament won by Cape Fear with a total of 29 points.

Matthew Friesen had a strong performance for O'Neal in the fifth flight.

He picked up a first-round win over Parrott Academy's Gray Bahnson, then upset No. 3 seed Tyler Lippard 7-6, 4-6, 6-3 in the second round. In the next round, he lost to eventual champion Andrew Schuett 6-1, 6-0.

The only other Falcon to pick up a win in the tournament was Austen Hasty in the second flight.

He came back to knock off Ben Jacobsen of Cary 0-6, 6-2, 6-1 in the first round, but lost to Greg Field of Cape Fear 6-3, 6-7, 6-2 in the next round.

In the first flight, David Neal of O'Neal lost a first-round match to Cape Fear's John Anderson.

In the third flight, Falcon Nick Webster lost to Ben Burt of Carolina Day by a 6-0, 6-0 score. In the fourth flight, Garrett Klumpar dropped a first-round decision to Keaton Nager 6-3, 6-2.

In the doubles flights, Neal and Steve Herlocker of O'Neal lost to Anderson and Anderson of Cape Fear by a 6-1, 6-1 score in the first flight.

In the second flight, Hasty and Webster were stopped by Covenant Day's Debrun and Adams 6-7, 6-3, 6-2. In the third flight, O'Neal's Baldelli and Shore lost 6-4, 6-3.
