"It's not too late to make your reservation for the Stoneybrook Gala scheduled for Thursday, April 3, at the Pinehurst Member's Club," says a spokesman.

Guests will enjoy cocktails while bidding on the items offered in the silent auction. Following a sit-down dinner in the ballroom, partygoers will dance to the music of Goldrush.

"For many, this will be a last change to enjoy the Member's Club before it is torn down to make room for a new clubhouse," says the spokesman.

Auction items are too numerous to list but will include a four-night stay in a private home on the fairway of the old course at the Greenbriar. There will also be a surprise golf package certain to be coveted by all golfers. The cost of the entire evening for this event is $150 per person.

For more information or to receive an invitation to the gala, call Jackie Garris at 295-0682 or Mary Schwab at 695-1675.

The 57th running of Stoneybrook is set for Saturday, April 5.

Known as the official "Rite of Spring," the steeplechase enjoyed enormous popularity from 1949 to 1996.

Drawing as many as 20,000 spectators when it was held at the Mickey Walsh Farm in Southern Pines, Stoneybrook became a well-established stop for the best steeplechase horses, riders, and trainers on the East Coast.

The event moved to Carolina Horse Park off N.C. 211 near Raeford several years ago.

Gates open at 9:30 a.m., and post time is 1 p.m.

Race day activities include a hat contest, tailgate contest, a children's area, an antique car show and pony races.

There will be large infield video screens available.

Opening ceremonies begin at 11 a.m. with the national anthem.

There are several different ticketing options. For details, visit carolinahorsepark.com.
