Sandhills Best Bets: Fiddler Convention Set in High Falls

The 73rd annual Highfalls Old-Time Fiddlers' Convention will be held at North Moore High School Auditorium on Saturday, March 8. The auditorium is located on North Moore Road between High Falls and Robbins.

Registration for participants will begin at 5 and end at 7:30 p.m. Bands can participate without preregistration.

Admission is $7 per person for an evening of entertainment that begins at 6 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at the door. A concession stand will be open throughout the evening.

Over $1,000 in cash prizes and ribbons will be given for the following categories: bands, fiddle, banjo, guitar, mandolin, singer, dancing, bass fiddle, dobro, piano, and most promising young talent. Trophies will also be given for the first, second and third place bands.

This event is sponsored by Highfalls Elementary School, with the proceeds being used to benefit the school. Dave "JJ" Moore will emcee this event where some of the best musicians in the state can be heard.

Paper Recycling

Keep Moore County Beautiful Inc. is sponsoring a mixed paper recycling drive from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, March 8, at the Kangaroo Station in the Fresh Market Shopping Center, Southern Pines.

Acceptable items include anything that is paper: paper grocery bags, flattened boxes, telephone books, junk mail, magazines, catalogs, flattened corrugated cardboard, office paper, and newspapers.

Also accepted will be any type of household batteries and inkjet, laser, toner cartridges, and cell phones.

Plant Pickup

"The Master Gardeners of Moore County would like to thank the hundreds of people who ordered blueberry, fig and grape plants during their recent sale," say a spokesman. "Now it's pickup and planting time."

Plants can be picked up at Len Tufts' Gray Fox Farm II, 2760 Murdocksville Road, Friday, March 7, noon to 4 p.m., and Saturday, March 8, 9 a.m. to noon.

Proceeds will be used to fund community projects throughout the county.

Sketchbook

Local rock band Sketchbook will be performing Saturday, March 8, at Greensboro Coliseum as part of the ACC Women's Basketball Tournament semi-finals.

The band will play two sets.

Sketchbook has continued to land major events and has played with major artists at huge venues since it's big debut at the 1999 U S Open in Pinehurst.
