Recognizing the importance of bone density testing in women for the detection of osteoporosis, Belk in Southern Pines will host an event in conjunction with Community Health Services/ Mobile Health Services, First-Health of the Carolinas.

It will be held Tuesday, March 11, from 9 a.m. until noon in Belk's parking lot at Pinecrest Plaza.

Osteoporosis screenings will be available for women only for a $5 fee, no appointments necessary.

Osteoporosis is a condition in which a progressive decrease in the density of bones weakens the bones, making fractures likely. Because more bone is formed than is broken down in the young adult years, bones progressively increase in density until the person is about age 30, when they are at their strongest. After that, a breakdown outstrips formation, bones slowly decrease in density.

At first, osteoporosis produces no symptoms because bone density loss occurs gradually. Some women never experience symptoms, but are at risk for aching bone pain, deformities and fractures.

About eight million women in the United States have osteoporosis.

Anyone needing more information on the event can call 715-1925.
