The smoky air in downtown Southern Pines and elsewhere in the southern part of the county Thursday was attracting a lot of concern and attention.

The smoke was coming from a controlled burn of about 100 acres on Fort Bragg, not a wildfire, according to the Southern Pines Fire Department.

The state and county lifted a burning ban Monday thanks to recent rains.
