Chef Mark Elliott, chef/owner of Elliott's on Linden in Pinehurst, is hosting a free cooking school workshop, "Knife Skills 101," at the cooking school at Kitchen Essence at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 28.

The class will cover the most basic of all chef tools: the knife. Care of knives, sharpening tips and basic cuts will be discussed.

As with most arts, mastery of the basics is fundamental.
