A Carthage truck driver died in Virginia Thursday when his vehicle struck the back of another tractor-trailer on Interstate 95.

According to the Virginia State Police, John Earl Forrest, 58, died on the scene. The accident occurred about 15 miles north of Fredericksburg at the 145-mile marker, according to Sgt. F.L. Tyler.

Forrest was headed south on I-95, Tyler said, at about 2:20 a.m. when he approached a construction area. The traffic slowed and he struck the rear of a truck driven by Howard L. Cole Jr., 32, of Bennett.

Cole's truck struck the rear of a 2007 Chevrolet car driven by Fredericksburg resident Michael Rainey, 55. Neither Cole nor Rainey was injured.

Trooper B.J. Horner is investigating the accident along with the Virginia State Police crash reconstruction team.

Forrest worked for Chief Express Trucking in Seagrove.
