WEB: McGowan Tied for Second in N-S Junior

Michael McGowan of Southern Pines entered Wednesday's second round of the North and South Junior Championship in a tie for second place.

The O'Neal School standout fired a 69, trailing first-round leader Evan Beck of Virginia Beach, Va., by one stroke. Playing on Pinehurst No. 5 on Tuesday, McGowan carded a 32-37. Beck shot a 33-35 on his way to a four-under 68.

Sam Packard of Pinehurst was in a tie for 23rd after finishing Tuesday's round with a 73. Dylan Harris was in a tie for 37th with a 74. The field consisted of 106 players.

The boys are playing Pinehurst No. 8.

In the 42-player girls' division of the championship, Darlea Carr of Pinehurst was in a tie for 13th after opening with a 41-38 --79. The leader of the girls' division was Courtney McKim of Raleigh, who opened with a 37-33 -- 70 on Tuesday. The girls played Pinehurst No. 8 that was playing at par 72.

Amanda D'Ostroph of Whispering Pines opened with a 44-39 -- 83, good for a tie for 28th. Katie Roberts of Whispering Pines was all alone in 36th after her opening round 44-42 -- 86.

The girls are playing Pinehurst No. 2.
