Jan Lambert and Sherrie Ingram's first-graders at Robbins Elementary recently received a grant from the Sandhills Quilters' Guild in Southern Pines.
Lambert said that she decided to implement the quilt-making project with her class "based on the North Carolina Standard Course of Study and to provide valuable experience in this craft that honors their North Carolina heritage."
The students are designing the quilt and, to reinforce their learning with regard to making the quilt, they are producing artwork about North Carolina quilts, as well as completing Write from the Beginning activities using prompts about quilting. To promote parent involvement in the project, students are sharing their writing, conversations and art with parents when they visit the school.
The completed quilt will feature quilt squares designed exclusively by the first-graders in Lambert and Ingram's class. The squares will include seasons and special holidays in each season of the year and will be on display in June.?
