Chais Beloso and Josh Haley of Pinecrest were recently named to the 2008 North Carolina Baseball Coaches Association 4-A All-State Team.

In addition, Patriot coach Jeff Hewitt was honored by the organization as Region 4 Coach of the Year.

Beloso and Haley both plan to continue their baseball careers at UNC-Pembroke next year.

Beloso shared Mid-Southeastern Conference Player of the Year honors with Corey Ayers of Richmond Senior, another all-state selection.

Haley was an all-conference pick for the second time in his three-year varsity career.

Other recent Pinecrest baseball players to earn all-state recognition were Taylor Norfleet in 2005 and Seth Maness in 2006.

Beloso played shortstop and pitched for the Patriots during the just completed 19-5 season that included a conference-co-championship with Richmond.

He led the team in batting average (.438), hits (35) and RBIs (26).

On the mound, he compiled a record of 4-1 with two saves, and an ERA of 1.44. In 48 2/3 innings, the right-hander allowed 26 hits and struck out 87 batters while walking 24.

Haley, the Patriot lead-off man, batted .420 and led the team in runs (30), doubles (seven), home runs (six), stolen bases (21), walks (16) and on-base average (.539).

Hewitt led the Patriots to the state playoffs for the ninth year in a row.
