William Wesley "Bill" Smith, 82, of Latta, S.C., formerly of Rowland, died Tuesday, June 10, 2008, at McLeod Hospice House, Florence, S.C.

A funeral service was held at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, June 12, at Rowland United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Bryan Perry officiating. Burial was in Rowland Cemetery.

Mr. Smith was a member of Rowland United Methodist Church, serving as treasurer for many years. He was the former owner of C&S Grocery, which later became City Grocery. Mr. Smith served on the Robeson County Race Relations Board, and was a past president of the Old Asbury Church Association and the Rowland Historical Society. After his retirement, Mr. Smith became an employee of Boles Funeral Home, Rowland.

He is survived by his wife, Patsy Davis Smith, of the home; a stepson, Richard Taylor, of Latta; two stepdaughters, Julie Taylor, of Dillon, S.C., and Sharon Gobbel, of Glenn-Burney, Md.; a sister, Ruth Smith Sinclair, of Aberdeen; a niece, Teresa Galland; a nephew, David Sinclair, of Southern Pines; four stepgrandchildren; and one stepgreat-grandchild.

Boles Funeral Home, Rowland, is assisting the family.
