Both lanes of N.C. 5 will be temporarily closed from N.C. 2/McKenzie Road to Morganton Road beginning next week for railroad maintenance.
The road closing will be in effect from 6 a.m. this Sunday to 8 a.m. Sunday, June 15.
The N.C. Department of Transportation (NCDOT) and the village of Pinehurst are closing the stretch to allow for the Aberdeen Carolina & Western Railway to perform maintenance work on the railroad trestle that runs over N.C. 5.
The primary detour route will be along N.C. 211 to the Pinehurst Traffic Circle, then south down U.S. 15-501 to Morganton Road at Pinecrest Plaza. Motorists can then travel west on Morganton Road back to N.C. 5.
Access for residents living near or along N.C. 2 and McKenzie Road will be maintained, but no vehicles will be allowed to pass under the railway trestle during this period.
The NCDOT and the village said motorists should expect delays traveling around Pine-hurst and to allow for extra time to reach their destinations.
