Freestone peach season begins this week in the Sandhills.
The Montgomery County Center of the N.C. Cooperative Extension Service reports an abundant supply at farmers' markets and roadside stands.
Varieties ripening this week include Winblo, Nectar, Blaze Prince, Carogem, Big Mack, Loring, Paul Friday 23-A, Sugar Lady (white flesh), Sugar Giant (white flesh) and Bounty.
The peach season is reaching its peak this month, and the occasion will be highlighted by the annual Peach Festival scheduled Saturday, July 19, from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. in Candor. The festival will feature music as well as peaches and other foods. Those attending are asked to bring lawn chairs.
In addition to peaches, the Extension Service reports an abundance of other locally grown vegetables and fruits. Among them are tomatoes, sweet corn, squash, green beans, cantaloupes and watermelons.
