Three current Moore County school board members are seeking re-election, while a fourth has decided against seeking another term.

Two challengers have also filed to run for the Board of Education.

Current board Chairwoman Lorna Clack (District 1), became the latest incumbent to file. She joins Kathy Farren (District 2) and Bruce Cunningham (District 5), who also are seeking re-election.

Four seats on the eight-member board are up for election this year.

Clack, a longtime educator, said she thinks the board has made positive strides this year, and she wants to continue to make a difference for the students of Moore County.

"This year we have begun so many wonderful projects -- new schools, improved curriculum and others -- and I want to see them brought to fruition."

W. Joe Vaughn (District 4), whose seat is also up this year, has decided not to run for another term.

"There are other things I want to be doing in my life," Vaughn said. "It's been a good experience I have really enjoyed, and I feel I have contributed a lot."

Farren, a business owner from Pinehurst, is the only incumbent with opposition so far.

Ed Dennison, a retired businessman who has lived in Pinehurst for three years, said he has nine years of experience as a school board member in Center Line, Mich.

"I was starting to have a guilty conscience," Dennison said of his choice to run. "I wanted to do something for the community and I felt this was the area I had the most expertise."

Laura Kelly Kite of Whispering Pines has filed for the seat now held by Vaughn. A former teacher and private school board member in Indiana, Kite is an independent certified public accountant.

She has been a resident of Moore County since 1994. She currently lives in Whispering Pines. She has a son who attends kindergarten at Sandhills Farm Life.

She says her background as a mother, educator and business person gives her a unique perspective.

"This is an exciting time of growth for our schools, and I look forward to being a part of it," Kite said.

Kite has served on Sandhills Children's Center Board of Directors and teaches accounting at Sandhills Community College.

The filing period runs through noon Feb. 29.
