The Pinecrest boys improved to 10-0 on the season with an 81-48 victory over West Montgomery in Holiday in the Pines first-round boys' basketball tournament play on Saturday night at Pinecrest High School.
The Patriots were led by Jarrin Wooten and Evan Cole with 12 points each, while Julian Brewer added 11. They will meet Trinity Christian (13-3) on Monday at 7:30 p.m. in one of the semifinal contests.
Led by Tommy McLean with 30 points, Trinity Christian was a 78-58 winner over Holly Springs in the second afternoon game at James Moore Gym.
The day almost began with a stunning upset. Durham Academy (4-7) led heavily favored Wakefield (7-4) by six points with one minute left in regulation. But a layup by the Wolverines' Xavier Saddler-Mee, seconds before time expired, tied the game at 55-55. They completed the comeback by outscoring Durham 11-3 in the overtime to escape with a 66-58 victory.
Wakefield faces Richmond Senior (4-7), a 70-54 winner over Overhills, in Monday's 6 p.m. semifinal. The Raiders were led by Lovell Joy with 23 points.
Monday's fare also includes two consolation bracket games. Durham Academy and Overhills will face off at 2 p.m., followed by a Holly Springs against West Montgomery contest at 3:30 p.m.
