The Moore County Choral Society, under the direction of Anne Dorsey, will begin its 2008-2009 season on Tuesday, Sept. 2, with registration starting at 6:30 p.m. and practice starting at 7:30. Practice is in the fellowship hall at Brownson Presbyterian Church at the corner of South May Street and Massachusetts Avenue in Southern Pines.

Registration for new members continues until Sept. 9.

"Both male and female singers are needed and encouraged to come and join us," says a spokesman.

No audition is required and rehearsals are held each Tuesday evening from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Dues are $35 for adults and $20 for students. Music is included. Concert attire may require an additional cost.

The Moore County Choral Society performs two different concerts.

The holiday concert "'Tis the Season" will be performed Dec. 7, 2008, at 2 and 7 p.m. in Owens Auditorium at Sandhills Community College.

The society will be singing Z. Randall Stroope's "Hodie" with brass and organ as the centerpiece of the concert, as well as the popular "Musicological Journey Through the Twelve Days of Christmas."

The classical concert, "An American Portrait," will be performed Sunday, April 26, at 4 p.m. at Pinecrest High School.

This concert will include Aaron Copland's "Old American Songs," and Randall Thompson's "Frostiana," along with other patriotic and spiritual arrangements.

"Singing improves our health, and studies link it with stress reduction and pain," says the spokesman.

"It has been shown to boost the immune system and to enhance well-being. It provides physical, emotional and spiritual fulfillment. So, if you enjoy singing and have the desire, please come and join us."
