The Flyers and lights out went together in a historic moment Wednesday at Heins Gym on the Sandhills Community College campus.
The SCC women's volleyball team joined a record book that has been dormant since the early 1980s with a 25-13, 23-25, 27-25, 25-13 win over visiting Rockingham Community College.
It was the first win for an athletic team at the school since it suspended its athletic program in the early '80s. With a storm pounding the area, the lights in the gym blinked off several times, but the Flyers didn't blink when it came to being the team to produce the first 'W' in the newly resurrected program.
The Flyers opened the season with a road loss to Davidson Community College. But a little home-cooking (despite the flickering lights) and a few more days of practice proved to be a good balm for Sandhills, according to coach Tabitha Crider.
"I was pleased with all the improvement we made from the first game to this (the win tonight)," she said.
