The Rooster's Wife will host the next installment of Summer on the Porch, Sunday, Aug. 24, at the Postmaster's House in Aberdeen.
"Bluegrass fans will take to these groups like ducks to water," says Janet Kenworthy, organizer of the music series. "Two terrific bands will visit Aberdeen, each with their own style of old-time and new-fangled acoustic music."
Opening the concert is the Charlotte-based group, The New Familiars. From the foothills of Appalachia, this new musical combo has grown from seeds of the folk, blues, and bluegrass found abundant in the Carolinas.
"These five gentlemen combine an amazing passion for harmony with multi-instrumental talent and unusual storytelling abilities," says Kenworthy. "They so obviously enjoy themselves when on stage, it is impossible not join in the fun."
What happens when four songwriters get together to mash up blues, folk, gospel, indie and world music to soothe their musical curiosity? You have the Boulder Acoustic Society.
Kailin Yong is a violinist from Singapore, who ventured beyond the classical world to play music for world peace. Aaron Keim is a bassist and collects obscure folk songs and builds his own instruments. Scott McCormick is an accordionist who found music in the gospel churches and the clubs of Chicago. Scott Aller is a percussionist who left behind his drum kit to play a wooden box, a washboard and scrap metal.
The show starts at 6 p.m. with gates opening at 5:30. Admission for adults is $9. Children under 12 are always admitted free to outdoor concerts.
"Snow cones, frozen lemonade and hot dogs will be available on site, or you may bring your own picnic," says Kenworthy. "Remember to bring a chair or blanket, and that the show goes on, rain or shine."
The Rooster's Wife is a private nonprofit association organized to celebrate the performing arts in Aberdeen.
