St. Andrews Presbyterian College has moved decisively into the digital age with plans to offer online academic programs in the fall.

"By taking steps toward online instruction, we will see promising new opportunities to extend the reach of our academic programs." said college President Paul Baldasare. "The addition of online programs not only helps us advance our mission, but also it allows for greater flexibility in course delivery and provides easier access for adult learners seeking a degree-completion program."

In fall 2008, the college will launch its first two online degree completion programs leading to the bachelor of arts in business administration and the bachelor of arts in liberal studies.

These programs will allow students with an associate's degree or transferable credit hours from an accredited college or university to complete an undergraduate degree in an online format.

St. Andrews is also offering online courses for K-6 elementary education certification.

The core mission of St. Andrews Presbyterian College has primarily been undergraduate education of traditional-aged, residential college students. Facing increasing competition for students, the college has recognized the need to expand its range of services.

Dr. William McConnell, associate dean for adult and extended programs, will provide leadership for this new initiative. He will also continue to serve as director of the college's music program.

The original inspiration for turning to distance learning came as the college sought new ways to provide its signature liberal arts and sciences education to nontraditional students. Online education -- with its appealing, student-oriented advantages of flexibility and convenience -- provides St. Andrews with the opportunity to expand its reach to adult learners and other nontraditional college students.

"At St. Andrews, we pride ourselves on our interdisciplinary, personalized and innovative approach to education," Baldasare said. "Students enrolling in the online programs will have the opportunity to connect with faculty and other students from their own homes.

"Our online programs will help the working adult acquire new skills and confidence, both assets when seeking advancement in a current career or beginning exploration of new opportunities in a different field."

With its new online campus, St. Andrews sees much growth potential in the future. In fact, future programs in equine studies, therapeutic horsemanship, communications and forensic science are in the planning stages.
