Youth In-Line Hockey League Forms
In this league all participants will have FUN while learning the basic fundamentals and skills of in-line hockey. Five age divisions will be offered: 5- 7, 8-9, 10-11, 12-13, and 14-17. Age determined as of August 1, 2008. Registration deadline is Aug. 29. Space is limited. All games and practices will be held at the hockey rink at Rassie Wicker Park. First practices will be held the second week of September. Mandatory equipment includes a helmet with protective mask, elbow pads, kneepads, shin guards, a mouthpiece, a protective cup/pelvic protector, hockey gloves, a hockey stick, and in-line skates. The cost is $10 for village of Pinehurst residents and $15 for nonresidents. Anyone interested in coaching should indicate so on the registration form. The Coaches' meeting will be held at 6 p.m. Sept. 3 in the Assembly Hall. Call 295-2817 if you have any questions or would like more information.
Youth Tackle Football
Southern Pines Recreation is holding registration for at youth tackle football league for boys and girls ages 10 to 12. Age determined as of Aug. 1, 2008. Registration deadline 5 p.m. Aug. 20. After hours registration 5 to 6 p.m. Aug. 13 at Southern Pines Recreation Office. Forms online at www.southernpines.net/Recreation/Athletics.aspx. Machine Pitch Baseball League
A machine pitch baseball league for children ages 6 to 8 will focus on fundamentals, sportsmanship, teamwork and fun. Ages determined as of Aug. 1, 2008. Games are Monday and Wednesday evenings. Practices are Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. Volunteer coaches needed. Register by 5 p.m. Sept. 3. After hours registration 5-6 p.m. Aug. 13 at Southern Pines Recreation office. Moore County Junior Amateur Championship
The First Tee-Tin Whistles Junior Tour will be conducting the 2nd Annual Moore County Junior Amateur Championship at Pinewild CC August 19-20. Cyclones Hoops Meeting
The Sandhills Cyclones Girls basketball orgainization will have an open gym at 6:30 p.m. and a parent information meeting at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 26 at Vass Gym. The organization is looking to sponsor 10U, 11U, 12U and 14U teams to play this fall.

Meet the Vikings
Union Pines Athletic Program, in concert with the UP Vikings Boosters, is holding a "Meet the Vikings Night" at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 18 at the school. There will be food, ice cream, UP Viking merchandise, music and introductions of the spring season's coaches and players. Co-Ed Softball League
Moore County Parks and Recreation is currently organizing a Co-Ed Softball League to begin play the first of September. The entry fee for the league will be $525 and must be paid by 5 p.m. on Aug. 22 at the Parks and Recreation office at 155 Hillcrest Park Lane in Carthage. The league will play ASA Softball rules. Games will be played on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. Anyone wishing to enter a team must pay there entry fee by the deadline. Cross Country Practice
Preseason practices for the Pinecrest boys' and girls' cross country teams are being held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Monday through Friday at the high school. When school begins the practice time changes to 3:30 until 5:30 p.m.
The first meet of the season is the Jungle Run held at South View High School on Saturday, Aug. 30. For additional information, contact coach John Buchholz at 919-667-5557.
Aberdeen T-Ball League
Come join Aberdeen's Fall T-Ball League. This activity is available for children ages 4-5 (age as of Aug. 10, 2008). Practices will begin in September. Practices and games will be held at Colonial Heights Park on Tuesday and Thursday evenings (Saturday mornings if needed). Fees are $12 for residents (must reside within city limits) and $25 for nonresidents. The registration deadline is August 29. Fall Baseball Sign-Ups

NFL Punt, Pass, and Kick
The Aberdeen, Pinehurst, and Southern Pines Parks and Recreation Departments will offer a local qualifying NFL Punt, Pass, and Kick competition on Sept. 10, 6 p.m. at Memorial Park in Southern Pines. This free competition is for youth ages 8-15 (age as of December 31, 2007) and you must show proof of age when registering for this program. Registration forms will be available on the day of the event. Winners will advance to a sectional competition. For more information contact Aberdeen Parks and Recreation Department at 944-5902.
New Sports Programs
Family Support Network of the Sandhills and the Moore County Parks and Recreation Department are working together to create a sports program for families with children with disabilities.
They are looking for families to join. Any person is eligible, ages 4-adult. Volunteer as a member of the planning committee. For more info, call Christine at 692-6123 ext. 25, or visit www.fsnsandhills.info.
PHS Youth Nights
Pinecrest High School will host a youth night for each sport. On designated nights for each sport, children wearing the jersey from their corresponding recreation or middle school team will be free. Football youth night is Oct. 3. Soccer youth night is set for Sept. 2, and volleyball and winter and spring sports will be announced at a later date.
PHS Total Sports Passes on Sale
Total Sports Passes are now on sale. The passes allow admission to all regular season home sporting events. The card admits one person per event and are not valid at tournaments or playoff events.
Passes are available at the following prices: Student (K-8) $50; Pinecrest Student Pass, 75; One Adult Pass $100. Two Adult Passes $150. Three Adult Passes $200. Four Adult Passes $250. Each addition passes $50 each. Passes must be purchased by Oct. 1. To purchase a pass, contact Ernie Purnsley, athletic director, at (910) 692-6554.
Fore Kids Sake golf tourney
Communities in Schools is hosting its second annual golf tournament, Fore Kids Sake on Aug. 26 at Pinehurst No. 8. Tournament is a best ball format with a 1 p.m. shotgun start. MOAA golf tournament
The Sandhills Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America (MOAA) will be hosting its annual golf tournament Sept. 25 at Whispering Woods Golf Club. All of the proceeds from the event go directly to the high school ROTC Scholarship Fund. MOAA provides scholarships to deserving high school seniors throughout Moore, Lee, Anson and Montgomery counties. This tournament is open to all. It begins at 10 a.m. with a shotgun start. Cost: $60. Lunch included.
Anyone not interested in playing golf can make a contribution of the $60 entry fee and a "Warrior" will be assigned to play in his or her place. The "Warrior" Golf Program is designed to allow our returning Soldiers or Airmen to play in the tournament free of charge. UMM Golf Tournament
The United Methodist Men of Southern Pines UMC are holding their 9th annual golf tournament at the Hyland Hills Golf Club on Aug. 16. Cost of $65 per person includes green fee and cart, goodie bag, drink refreshments, prizes, and lunch. The captain's choice event begins with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. Proceeds support the UMM's youth missions in Moore County. For more information, contact Tom at 949-4090.
