The Moore Philharmonic (MPO) will kick off its 2008-2009 season with an organizational meeting and barbecue from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 30, at Aberdeen Lake Park. The park is located on U.S. 1 just north of N.C. 5.

"Current and former members, and any amateur musician interested in joining the orchestra are invited to be our guests for the meeting to outline new season programs and to enjoy a complimentary barbecue meal," a spokesman says. "Spouses are welcome."

"There are openings in every section and auditions are not required to join," says Eric M. Kopecky, music director and conductor. "This is a great opportunity for potential new members to be introduced to the orchestra in an informal social outing.

"Individuals and couples interested in supporting the orchestra as volunteers are also cordially invited to attend this event. As the Orchestra continues to grow there are numerous opportunities for volunteers to contribute to various projects and become a closer part of the orchestra family."

The business meeting will be held in the new Aberdeen Lake Park Club House at 5 p.m., followed by dinner. Plans for the season will be announced including some exciting growth programs and the relocation of the orchestra's rehearsal headquarters to Sandhills Community College.

The Moore Philharmonic Orchestra is a nonprofit community symphony orchestra consisting of adults of all ages and students.

This season, the MPO will continue to provide free classical and pops concerts throughout the county and strengthen its student scholarship program. Concert dates and locations will be announced soon.

Reservations for the Aug. 30 barbecue are required and may be made by e-mail at moorephilorch@aol.com or by calling 944-3452.
