Saturday, April 26, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. the Pinehurst Garden Club will have its annual plant sale in the parking lot at Given Memorial Library.
After a visit with the grower, Jim Matthews of Sunnyside Nurseries, PGC members are saying that this is one of the most beautiful selections of plants yet. Plants being offered the day of sale will still mainly be of the drought-tolerant variety, including vincas, bronze leaf begonias, geraniums, hanging baskets, ferns, mandevilla, lantana, verbena, herbs and Wave petunias. A few of those thirstier plants, such as impatiens, will also be available now.
In the tent this year there will be tips available on water conservation, soil conditioners to extend moisture, and container planting hints. There also will be a raffle added this year for a large container filled with gardening needs, a beautiful birdhouse, gardening apron and flag to name a few of the many items included.
"For more than 20 years, the plant sale has been a successful effort to beautify our communities as well as support community beautification projects, offer a full scholarship to a Sandhills Community College horticultural student, and offer support to the Master Gardeners and other gardening education programs," says a spokesman. "In the past years up to $13,000 has been raised for these efforts. This year however, pre-sales are down, most likely due to drought concerns in the past months. With the recent rains and the beautiful plants available on day of sale, the PGC members are hopeful to meet their goals for these community efforts."
Donations to support these projects can also be made to the Pinehurst Garden Club and sent to PO Box 4006, Pinehurst NC 28374. For questions about the plant sale, call Lynn Delgarn at 215-0811 or Shirley Schultz at 235-5284.
