Commissioners Have Hands in Our Pockets

The Airport Authority is asking Moore County to lend it $2 million, so it can build some new hangars? The Authority itself has the ability to borrow, but it wants taxpayers to foot the loan. They also want to lease the hangars and keep the proceeds. They have over $700,000 in liquid assets.

Our liberal commissioners have already forgiven the Authority an obligation of $242,000.

We have poured a lot of taxpayer money into the airport: the new fuel farm, new fire truck, new fencing, renovation of the terminal, repaving the runway and taxiway, new equipment to accommodate passengers entering and exiting planes, new runway lighting, new radio communicators, and moving N.C. 22 with matching grants.

We lost the second airline, and none will provide service in the future.

When is enough, enough? John Owens, County Republican chairman and also chairman of the Airport Authority, is close friends with Colin McKenzie, chairman of the county commissioners. Once again, watch the power of three.

We are spending millions for the benefit of the rich who own aircraft. The aircraft based at the airport generate $57,901 in tax revenue -- at what cost to us?

We all pay for the few. When is the last time most of us went to the airport?

Is this another justification for a tax increase? Property revaluation was an inflated value in a deflated real estate environment and resulted in new tax revenue of $23.5 million to Moore County. What happened to it? We do not need an increase in property taxes or sales tax.

If we give it to them, they will spend it. They are liberal Democrats in Republican clothing. Commissioners, get your hands out of our pockets.
