Let's call this the week of county rivals meeting on courts and links, while spring break for the local high schools bring into play some interesting opportunities to plunk down in the sun and watch some tournaments.
The county showdowns include a Monday of tennis and golf. At Union Pines, the Vikings will welcome Pinecrest to the tennis courts for a battle of two unbeaten teams. The 3-A Vikings are 13-0 for the season, while the 4-A Patriots haven't played as many matches on their way to a 6-0 mark. The rackets start swinging at 4:30 p.m.
Over at Pinehurst No. 8 the sticks swinging will be golf clubs when the Patriots and O'Neal, a private school in Southern Pines, engage in a nine-hole match play event. The first match gets under way at 4 p.m. The Falcons continue to entertain county schools when Union Pines drives over to No. 8 for a match on Thursday.
Starting Thursday, baseball teams from Union Pines and North Moore take to the road to play in tournaments. The Vikes are participating in the Douglas Byrd Invitational, while the Mustangs get three days of competition in the South Stanly tournament. Pinecrest doesn't enter the picture until Saturday when it heads to Greenville to play J.H. Rose in the Hot Stove Baseball Tournament.
Completing the tournament journeys is the North Moore softball team. The Mustangs have a two-day tour of outstanding competition when they compete in the Southern Alamance tournament.
