An apology and an unprecedented correction of the minutes came at the end of the Monday night meeting of the Moore County Board of Commission-ers.
The board has just voted to appoint Harry Huberth as an alternate member of the Planning Board when Chairman Colin McKenzie said he wanted to apologize for "what happened" at the last meeting.
McKenzie was referring to the vote to appoint Kim VonCanon to succeed Huberth as a member of the Planning Board. Huberth, who served as chairman of the Planning Board for a number of years, was not eligible for reappointment because the bylaws prohibit a member from serving more than two consecutive terms on the board. VonCanon is also a former member, but she has been off the Planning Board a couple of years.
However, McKenzie cast the only oral vote in opposition to the VonCanon appointment at the commissioners' March 5 meeting. His objection was not to VonCanon, but to the appointment of a successor to Huberth at a time when the Planning Board would be without a chairman or a vice chairman. The bylaws require the commissioners to appoint the Planning Board chairman and the Planning Board members to elect their vice chairman.
In this instance, the former vice chairman, Terry Bryant, had already rotated off the board, and now Huberth was being succeeded. The commissioners have yet to name a chairman.
UNANIMOUS -- McKenzie said he wanted to correct his "no" vote March 5 and asked that the minutes of the previous meeting be amended to show VonCanon's appointment as unanimous.
"I was certainly not voting against Kim VonCanon," he said. "I want her recognized as a 5-0 vote."
VonCanon and another new appointee, Nancy Roy Fiorillo, were sworn in as members of the Planning Board on March 8. Fiorillo was appointed to fill the seat vacated by Bryant but had been unable to attend previous meetings because of serious illness in her family.
After McKenzie's request, Commissioner Tim Lea made a motion to amend the minutes of the March 5 meeting to reflect a 5-0 vote by his board.
McKenzie also said that he was pleased that Huberth is willing to continue to serve the Planning Board as an alternate.
DEM PRECINCTS -- Two more Democratic precinct meetings have been announced.
Carthage Democrats will hold their precinct meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 22, at county Democratic headquarters at 104A McNeill St. in Carthage. The main purpose of the meeting is to elect delegates to the county Democratic convention.
Knollwood Democrats will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 27, in the Sledge Boardroom in Stone Hall on the campus of Sandhills Community College. They will elect precinct officers and delegates to the county convention.
George H. Wilson Jr., chairman of the Moore County Democratic Party, says all registered Democrats in these precincts are "strongly encouraged to attend" their respective meetings.
ABERDEEN ETJ -- Broadus Combs has been appointed as an extraterritorial jurisdiction representative on the Aberdeen Town Planning Board and will serve a three-year term.
His appointment was made by the Moore County Board of Commissioners at the March 5 meeting.
