Pinecrest wrestlers swept the field in Friday's tri-meet at Terry Sanford High School, upending North Brunswick 53-28 and downing the host Bulldogs 48-29.
The Patriot pattern this season has been to pin or get pinned. That template was true again, with no better example than in the 215-pound class where Pinecrest freshman Daniel Keith split a pair of fiercely contested matches.
Keith took North Brunswick's Bryant Burton to the mat at the whistle, but Burton caught Keith in a reversal and rolled him to his back for a first-round fall. Paired against Terry Sanford 215-pounder Jonathan Coley, Keith executed four takedowns before pinning Coley at the 3:39 mark.
Brad McKeever (152 pounds) moved into the No. 10 spot in this week's NCMat.com Super 32 4-A standings, setting up a duel with North Brunswick's Billy Stalnaker, ranked 10th in the 1-A/2-A Super 32. McKeever took the first points on a takedown, but Stalnaker recovered with a reversal and back points. McKeever finished on the short end of a 10-2 major decision.
A shuffle in the lineup bumped McKeever to 160 against Terry Sanford where he worked Tim Hines for three takedowns and a pair of back points before sticking him for the fall at 1:07.
It was all or nothing for other Patriots. Seven wrestlers went 2-0 for the evening.
Glen Holmes notched his 40th win of the season, bringing his record to 40-1. No. 39 came as a bonus, collected on a North Brunswick forfeit, but Holmes reached the 40-win mark by going the full six minutes to take a 12-3 major decision over Terry Sanford 189-pounder Dominic Goins.
Heavyweight Andrew Pugsley sparred with North Brunswick's big-man Joseph Richardson, with neither wrestler scoring in the first period. Richardson's choice of a defensive start in the second round was a bad one, as Pugsley took advantage of the top position to force a pin 46 seconds into the period. A Terry Sanford forfeit in the second match gave the Pinecrest senior another win.
At the other end of the roster, Pinecrest posted big points.
Sam Ransdell, knocking on the door of a 40-win season at 103, moved to 38-7 with a 19-3 technical fall over Terry Sanford's Matt Wilson and a forfeit win against North Brunswick. Ransdell moved into the second spot in this week's Super 32 rankings.
Kevin Brown (112) had to work for his two wins, but not hard or long. Brown needed just over a minute to pin North Brunswick's James Fitzpatrick. It took a takedown and another minute to flatten Terry Sanford's David Salgado.
Sean Kaiser (130) won a rematch with Terry Sanford's Maurice Moore. Moore caught Kaiser in an earlier meeting in December, pinning him in the first round.
The story was different this time, with Kaiser taking charge at the outset and driving the train for six minutes to take a 13-7 decision. Kaiser won by forfeit against North Brunswick.
Trevor Capp added a pair of pins at 145. A takedown and nearfall against North Brunswick's Dewayne Freeman earned the first pin for Capp at the 1:25 mark. Capp went up 4-1 in the first round against Terry Sanford's Josh Free, then went straight to the pin from a top start in the second period.
The Patriots' Mike Evans is surely in the running for most improved wrestler this season. Evans picked up a mark in the win column with a forfeit at 152 from Terry Sanford, but showed he could do the work on his own as well with a 48-second fall over North Brunswick's Ethan Lickteig at 160.
The Patriots travel to Douglas Byrd tonight for their last date of the regular season, carrying a 14-11 overall record.
Postseason competition gets under way on Saturday with the Mid-Southeastern Conference Tournament at Jack Britt. Regional competition is slated for Feb. 17 in Wilmington.
