The North Moore High School basketball teams collected two victories over South Davidson High School on Friday at Robbins. The Mustang girls defeated the Wildcats in the preliminary contest by a score of 56-46, and the North Moore boys won the nightcap, 84-70.
Allison Braswell led the scoring for North Moore in the girls' game with 30 points, which included five field goals from long range, and 13 for 16 from the charity stripe. Logan Monroe added 11 points for the Mustangs.
After a slow-moving first quarter, which ended with the score knotted at nine points apiece, the Mustangs rallied to take a 10-point lead at the half, 28-18, led by Braswell's 16-point performance in the second quarter.
However, South Davidson came back in the third quarter, narrowing the gap to seven points, 40-33, at the end of the period, then tied the score midway through the fourth quarter at 45 points apiece.
At that point, however, South Davidson committed three personal fouls attempting to pressure the Mustang guards bringing the ball up-court. North Moore converted five of the six free-throws to give the Mustangs a five-point lead, then pulled away to win by 10.
"I was pleased with the way we played defense tonight," said Mustang coach Sammy McNeill following the game. "Those free throws were really important there at the end. This puts us ahead of South Davidson in the conference."
North Moore's record improved to 9-7 for the season, and they are 4-3 in the Yadkin Valley Conference standings.
In the boys' game, the two teams played even throughout the first quarter. Ben Wells hit two baskets for South Davidson at the end of the period to give the Wildcats a two-point edge, 13-11. However, the Mustangs scored 11 unanswered points at the beginning of the second quarter, and led by 12 points at the intermission, 39-27.
North Moore pressed full-court in the third quarter, forcing a number of Wildcat turnovers, and extended the margin to 22 points at the end of the third quarter, 66-44. The Wildcats outscored the Mustangs in the final period, 26-18, but it was too little, too late, and North Moore won by 14 points.
"We're not a half-court ball club," said Mustang coach Chris Coble after the game. "We decided to press full-court and make something happen. We got a lot of transition baskets tonight."
Ryan Chisholm led North Moore with a game-high 30 points. Jerome Maness and Dwayne Simmons added 15 and 10 points, respectively, for the Mustangs. South Davidson had four players in double figures. Josh Aldridge was high for the Wildcats with 15 points, and Barrett Clodfelter, Christopher Frye and Ben Wells scored 14, 10 and 10 points, respectively.
North Moore's record improved to 7-8 for the season (3-4 conference).
North Moore will play at Chatham Central on Tuesday.
