For the first time in its wrestling history, Union Pines will be represented in all 14 weight classes at the regional tournament.
Viking junior Tony Fernandez, the second seed in the 135-pound class, will be seeking to qualify for the 3-A state championships for the second time at the Mideast 3-A Regional being held at Morehead High School tonight and Saturday.
The two-time Cape Fear Valley Conference champion has a record of 62-10 this season.
The top-four finishers at each of the four regional sites qualify for the state event held at Lawrence Joel Memorial Coliseum in Winston-Salem on Feb. 23-24.
Fourth seeds from the Vikings for the regional are junior Joey Beck in the 160-pound class (53-20 season record) and senior Dan King (57-10), the Cape Fear Valley Conference 285-pound champion.
Senior Doug Roach (31-25) in the 140-pound class and junior Aaron Breasseale at 145 (29-29) are seventh seeds.
Also making the trip to Morehead representing the Vikings are James Smearman (103 pounds), Sean Foran (112), Billy Talley (119), Zeb Bullock (125), Sean Brennan (130), Tyler Crowley (152), Darrell Pate (171), Kaleb Rierson (189) and Nick Capps (215).
Union Pines finished third in last year's Mideast Regional behind first place Morehead and runnerup Rockingham County.
