Pinecrest Team Presents Debate
The Pinecrest Speech and Debate team will present the third annual "Evening of Speech and Debate" on Friday, Feb. 9.
The program will be held in the Pinecrest Media Center and will feature presentations by students competing at the Harvard National High School Invitational Debate Tournament Feb. 16-20.
"This program is open to the general public, and the team encourages anyone and everyone to attend," says Libby Carter, the adviser.
The "Evening of Speech and Debate" is an opportunity for the Speech and Debate team to rehearse its competitive pieces and to practice debating one another. This is the third time that the team has traveled to the tournament.
"This year we are sending the largest team yet," says Carter.
The Friday evening presentation will include duo interpretation of "Misery" by Leah Elliott and Nick Dokich, "A Christmas Carol" by Brendan Chaney and Andrew Garrison, and "The Wizard of Oz" by Lizzie Bradley and Jenny Questell.
Sessions of Congressional debate will include Hanna Bustillo, Cameron Tysinger, Ben Berk, Matt Shuster, Michelle Sohn, Jake McSwain, and Jake Hamilton.
The teams of Caleb Frye and Elysia Tegui-in and Meredith Potter and Jessica Boylan will spar in Public Forum debate while Ashlyn Karan and Jake Flittner will present a Lincoln-Douglass debate.

Spelling Bee
The Spelling Bee for Literacy will be held Thursday, Feb. 15, at 7 p.m., at Sunrise Theater.
This fun-filled fundraising event supports Moore County Literacy Council.
Three-member teams compete for the coveted Best Spelling Team Trophy. Additional awards are given for Most Team Spirit and Best Team Costumes.
"Admission is free, but donations will definitely be welcome," says a spokesman.

Valentine's Concert
"Music to Love," The Sandhills Community College Jazz Band and Music Department will be having the annual Valentine's Day Concert on Wednesday, Feb. 14, at 7:30 p.m. in Owens Auditorium on the Sandhills campus. Admission is free.
Along with the SCC Jazz Band under the direction of Tim Haley, the college choir under the direction of Frances Wilson, and the guitar ensemble under the direction of Danny Infantino will perform.
Workshop
A free workshop, "Informed and Effective Parents," for parents and professionals who care for children with special needs, will be held at Our Saviour Lutheran Church, 1517 Luther Way, Southern Pines, Thursday, Feb. 15, from 5:30 to 8 p.m.
A light dinner is provided. Child care spaces are limited.
The workshop is provided by the Family Support Network of the Sandhills and co-sponsored with the Exceptional Children's Assistance Center.
