Moore County Sheriff deputies received a report Jan. 31 from the Department of Social Services that a 12-year-old girl was pregnant.

During the investigation deputies interviewed Dana Andrew Short, 55, of West End.

On Thursday, Sheriff's investigators arrested Short. He was charged with first degree rape of a child and indecent liberties.

He was jailed with a $250,000 bond. His first court appearance for these charges is set for Feb. 19 in Moore County District Court.

Friday, investigators arrested and charged Tina Lynn Hawthorne, 33, also of West End, with felony child abuse in connection with the case.

Hawthorne was released with a $100,000 unsecured bond. Her first court appearance is also set for Feb. 19 in Moore County District Court.

Hoke County Department of Social Services took custody of the girl and her two younger sisters.
