Moore County Sheriff Lane Carter said that on Jan. 31 his office received a report from the Department of Social Services that a 12-year-old girl was pregnant.

During the investigation deputies with the Moore County Sheriff's Office interviewed Dana Andrew Short, 55, in West End.

On Thursday, Sheriff's investigators arrested Short. He was charged with first degree rape of a child and indecent liberties with a child. Short is in the Moore County Detention Center under a $250,000 bond. His court appearance for these charges is set for Feb. 19 in Moore County District Court.

Friday, investigators arrested and charged Tina Lynn Hawthorne, 33, of 413 N.C. 73, with felony child abuse in connection with the case.

Hawthorne was given a $100,000 unsecured bond. Her court appearance is also set for Feb. 19 in Moore County District Court.

Hoke County Department of Social Services took custody of the girl and her two younger sisters.
