A martial arts studio for adults only called Standing Warriors Kenpo Karate Studios has opened in the area.

Head instructor R. Lynn Lane, along with assistant instructors Stephen Patterson and Danny Pace, say it was time to open a kenpo karate studio that teaches the art the way it was originally intended, for adults only.

Lane says martial arts in America or what some consider martial arts/karate has been so commercialized for kids it has taken some of the real self-defense out of it.

Kenpo karate has always been known as a warriors' martial art, he said. Kenpo has also been called scientific dirty fighting, Lane added.

Standing Warriors Kenpo Karate Studio is an IKCA school affiliate and associated with the Black Karate Federation.

Adults, ages 16 and over, are welcome to come by to visit and receive one free lesson. The official opening date was April 2.

The studio is at 5470 U.S. 1 South beside Vass Pools. Anyone wanting more information can contact Lane at 638-1905 or by e-mail at kenpolane@yahoo.com.
