Pencil it in. This coming Tuesday there will be a Cape Fear Conference volleyball showdown at Union Pines.

The Vikings, now 9-1 in the leagueand 12-1 overall, expected a tough match at Harnett Central on Thursday and they got one.

But Coach Leslie Fish's experienced squad survived, eking out a 21-25, 25-13, 25-21, 23-25 and 15-12 victory.

Courtney Sauer was the service leader for the Vikes with 20 points. Mikayla Deardorff was tops in digs with 11 and Carly Shiflett led the team in killswith 10 and blocks with five. Brynn Conner contributed 28 assists.

Triton, 9-1 and 12-2, is the only team to defeat Union Pines this season. The Hawksare also the only team to own a victory over Two Rivers Conference leader Terry Sanford.

They were expected to win a Thursday match against Overhills, setting up Tuesday's battle for sole possession of first place.

The Union Pines jayvee team also defeated Harnett Central to improve to 11-2 on the season.

Union Pines Soccer

The Union Pines boys' soccer team met some unexpectedly tough resistance in a non-conference match at Northwood on Thursday.

The contest ended in a 1-1 draw after it was called in the seventh minute of the second half because of stormy weather.

The first mark on the Viking's record puts them at 12-0-1. Northwood of the 2 A Mid-State Conference sits at 6-5-2.

Dalton Hadlock scored the Viking goal off a through ball from Jordan Mebane about 15 minutes into the match. The Chargers tied things up about 10 minutes later off a counterattack.

With the weather worsening as the second half began, the Vikings threatened to no avail.

The Vikings increased their lead in the Cape Fear Valley Conference to two games thanks to South Johnstons' 4-2 upset win over second place Harnett Central on Wednesday. It was the first time South Johnston has beaten the Trojans in 18 years.

In a match that went the distance, the Viking jayvee team (8-1-1)was beaten 1-0 by Northwood for its first loss of the season.

Pinecrest Soccer

In a battle of Mid-Southeastern and Two Rivers conference powers, the Pinecrest and Terry Sanford boys' soccer teams played to a 1-1 tie in Fayetteville on Thursday night.

The Patriots (11-1-1) got a first half goal by Coby Kavanaugh off a scramble in the Bulldog penalty box.They had several chances to add to the lead, once on a rocket off the foot of Jordan Howlett that hit the post and bounced away.

The home team (9-1-2) got even late in the second half when Domenico Grillo stepped into a ball just over the midfield line and sent it high into the net just out of the reach of the Patriot goalkeeper.

Ranked 10th in the 4-A coaches association poll this week,Pinecrest will take a 6-0 conference record into Monday's match at Douglas Byrd.

North Moore Volleyball

The North Moore volleyball team defeated Jordan Matthews at Robbins on Thursday by scores of 25-17, 25-10, 23-25 and 31-29.

The Mustangs are scheduled to play at Thomasville on Tuesday.

Varsity football -- Pinecrest at Richmond, 7:30 p.m.; Southern Lee at Union Pines (Homecoming), 7:30 p.m.; Chatham Central at North Moore, 7:30 p.m.
