BRIEFS: Viking Boys Defeat Overhills In Soccer to Stay Undefeated

Dalton Hadlock racked up four goals and an assist as the Union Pines boys' soccer team defeated winless Overhills 6-0 Wednesday night in Spring Lake.

One game into the second half of the Cape Fear Valley Conference schedule, the Vikings are 8-0 in the league and 12-0 overall. They were to travel to Northwood for a non-conference match on Thursday.

Hadlock already had a hat trick before the end of the first half. Freshman Va Cha scored the other two goals. Also contributing assists were Matt Williamson, Palmer Boles, Alex Wilson, Jarrod Hayslette and Chris Wylie.

Travis Frazier minded the net for the team's fifth shutout in a row and ninth this season. The Vikings were ranked 12th this week in the 3-A coaches association poll.

The Viking junior varsity team defeated Overhills 12-0. The jayvees are now 9-1-0 on the season, out-scoring their opponents 32 to one.

Vike Harriers Sweep

Blake Boyd, Ryan Heib and Ian Estep sauntered across the finish line almost together, leading the Union Pines boys' cross country team to another Cape Fear Valley Conference victory.

Boyd covered the course in 19:10, while Heib and Estep both finished in 19:11, as the Union Pines boys, now 5-0, won with 16 points to 45 for Triton in the meet run at Triton.

The Viking girls, 4-1, also won decisively, 21 to 40.

The Viking boys took eight of the first 10 places. Shawn Berry was fourth (19:14) followed by Curtis Frye, sixth (19:46), Carnell Oxendine, seventh (19:59), Clint Voss, ninth (20:41), and Taylor Haulsee, 10th (20:42).

Lee Godwin of Triton (21:06) was first in the girls' race, but the Viking girls also took eight of the first 10 spots.

Leading the visiting team with a second-place finish was Victoria Glenn (22:38) followed by teammates Kayla Lively, third (23:03), LeAnne Ferrell, fourth (23:21), Ana Maria Quiros, fifth (23:30), Emily Camp, seventh (24:58), Meghan McLendon, eighth (25:23), Kaiti Davis, ninth (26:22), and Brieanna Frye, 10th (26:24).

Both Viking squads will compete in the Greensboro Cross Country Invitational at Hagan Stone Park on Saturday.

Mustang Netters Fall

The West Montgomery High School volleyball team kept its conference record intact on Tuesday, defeating North Moore High School at Troy in three games by scores of 25-16, 25-9 and 25-13.

The Warriors' record improved to 13-2 for the season and they are undefeated in Yadkin Valley Conference play with a 9-0 record. North Moore's record fell to 6-4 (all conference matches).

The Mustangs were scheduled to play Jordan-Matthews at home on Thursday.

Jets Top Mustangs

The Jordan-Matthew High School girls' tennis team kept its season and conference records unblemished on Wednesday, defeating North Moore for the second time this season at Robbins by a score of 9-0.

The Jets' record improved to 14-0 for the season and 9-0 in the Yadkin Valley Conference, while the Mustangs' record dropped to 5-6 (all conference matches). The Mustangs are scheduled to play at Thomasville on Tuesday.
