North Moore Soccer
Aspirations for a Yadkin Valley Conference title might have gone poof if the North Moore boys' soccer team hadn't defeated Thomasville on Wednesday.
Sitting at 3-2 before the match in a league that includes three teams in the 1-A state rankings, the Mustangs kept its title hopes alive by beating the No. 5 Bulldogs 4-1.
After a close first half that ended 1-1, the Mustangs completely dominated the remaining time. Carlos Avila scored the go-ahead goal in the first minute after halftime, his second of the match.
In the 55th minute, Raul Chavez lofted a ball over the Bulldog defense onto the foot of Eric Diaz for a one touch finish, making it 3-1. Chavez put away a rebound in the 71st minute to complete the scoring.
"Coach (Michael Shamberger) really worked us hard yesterday and motivated us today." Chavez said afterward. "We got the job done."
The No. 7 Mustangs improved to 6-4 overall. Thomasville, the defending 1-A state champion, dropped to 2-2 in the conference and 6-2-1 overall.
