The Union Pines volleyball teamwas assured of retaining at least a share of the Cape Fear Valley Conference lead after defeating Gray's Creek 25-12, 21-25, 25-11 and 25-22 at home Tuesday evening.

It was a high energy effort for the Vikings as they jumped out to sizable leads in all four games. The Bears came from behind to win the second game and caught up with the Vikings at 20-20 in the fourth.

"Every team gets their runs," said Viking outside hitter Courtney Sauer, who had some acrobatic efforts among her nine digs."We just tried to hold them up as much as possible. We knew they were a good team that would get some points."

The Vikings regained the lead in the deciding set on a service error by one of the Bears. A win at the net by Lindsay Wilborn made it 22-20. Moments later, Sauer pushed a ball into space, making it 24-21. The match ended on a ball hit into the net by the Bears.

"This was a big game for us tonight," Viking coach Leslie Fish said.

Brynn Connor and Brianne Hendricks led the home team in service points with 13 and 12, respectively. Connor also had 23 assists and Hendricks contributed eight digs. Other Viking leaders were Carly Shiflett with 13 kills and Wilborn with six blocks.

Union Pines improved to 8-1 in the conference and 11-1 overall, while Gray's Creek dropped to 7-3 and 10-5. The Bears are the only team to defeat Triton, the team that shares the league lead with the Vikings.
