Pinecrest senior Andy Wacker finished fifth in the Nike Race of Champions on Saturday in Hoover, Ala.

The5K racewas part of the Great American Cross Country Festival that attracted many of the top high school runners and teams from the South and Northeast.

Ben Huber of McEachern High School in Georgia took first place with a time of 15:38. Wacker, competing as an individual, finished the race in 16:11.

Pinecrest Cross Country

Pinecrest runners won individual honors in both racesat the Frosh-Soph Invitational Cross Country Meet heldat Hanes Park in Winston-Salem on Saturday.

Billed as the unofficial jayvee state championships, Patriot sophomore Mark Moon took first in the boys' 5K run with a time of 18:27. Stephanie Shannon, a sophomore memberof the Patriot girls' team, crossed the finish line in 21:41 to take the girls' race.

Pinecrest finished in third place as a team behind Green Hope (first)and South View (second)in both the boys' and girls' competitions.

Other runners finishing in the top 15 for the Pinecrest boys wereScott Whitecar, seventh (19:09) and Craig Baggett, 12th (19:37). Lexie Schustrom, seventh (23:01) and Rebecca Dupre, 12th (23:45) were in that select company for the Pinecrest girls.

Boys' soccer -- Westover at Pinecrest, 7 p.m. (no jayvee); Union Pines at Western Harnett, 6:30 p.m. (jayvee, 5 p.m.); North Moore at Jordan-Matthews, 6:30 p.m.

Girls' tennis -- Union Pines at Harnett Central, 4 p.m.; North Moore at West Montgomery, 4:30 p.m.
