The 28th annual Autumnfest is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 7, at Downtown Park in Southern Pines.
The festival takes place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and has something for everyone: arts and crafts, live entertainment, rides, a one-mile fun run/walk, a 5K road race, and more.
Autumnfest entertainment will be headlined by Edsel 500, at 3 p.m. Recalling a golden age in American music when country, blues, swing, rhythm and blues and bluegrass created a restless mixture that exploded into the sounds of early rock 'n roll, Edsel 500 pays tribute to Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Eddie Cochran, Carl Perkins, Chuck Berry, and Bill Haley.
This Chapel Hill band provides a high-energy show with appeal to the young and old alike.
For the youth, Autumnfest will bring back Juggleboy. At 10:30 a.m. and 1:15 p.m., catch the "hottest" show in North Carolina, as he entertains the crowd with his juggling skills, including flaming torches.
Filling out the entertainment slate will be dance demonstrations by Carolina Performing Arts Center (10 a.m.) and Terpsichore (1:45 p.m.).
In addition to the entertainment, Interactive Playgrounds will bring several inflatable rides and other games for kids of all ages, such as the Castle Jump, a 3-Hole Miniature Golf Course, the Scramble Slide, Cameron the Caterpillar, and the Double-Shot Basketball Game.
The games will be located on the tennis courts in the park.
Filling out the entertainment slate will be the German band sounds of the Bavarian Brass Band (9:15 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.), and demonstrations by Gracie Jiu-Jitsu (11 a.m.) and the Academy of Tae Kwon Do (noon and 2:15 p.m.).
Autumnfest will offer its annual one-mile fun run/walk and the 5K road race with an all-new route. The one-mile fun run/walk gets underway at 9:30 a.m. and is free of charge.
The 5K Road Race will begin at 9:50 a.m. and winds through beautiful Southern Pines into horse country and back.
The cost of the 5K is $10 prior to Sept. 29 and $12 the day of the race. The race entrance fee includes an Autumnfest T-shirt.
To receive a race registration, call the Southern Pines Recreation and Parks Dept. at 910-692-2463.
Race registration on the day of the event will begin at 8:30 a.m. at the Rainey Shelter.
Awards will be presented at 11:30 a.m. at the Autumnfest stage.
"Everyone is invited to come early to the picturesque setting of downtown Southern Pines for this annual fall event, presented by Aberdeen Coca-Cola Bottling Co., Johnny O's Awards, Sand-hills Trophy and Sports, Embarq, the Southern Pines Recreation and Parks Department, and the Arts Council of Moore County," says a spokesman.
